A Very Strange Superstition....

This Asian superstition comes from a Chinese person who grew up in Malaysia:

Pregnant women should not sit on the edge of a bed and sew because this will cause the backside of the baby to be sealed shut!

How strange!! Can you think of any extremely bizarre superstitions from your own culture?? I'd love to hear them!

  2. What about the "bloody mary" superstition?! I'm not even sure from which culture that began, but I know that it deals with being in a dark bathroom and saying the phrase: "bloody mary" into a mirror 3 times and then her ghost is supposed to appear! It's pretty bizarre and freaky when you think about it...definitely has relations back to Mary I's reign over England and her persecution of Protestant people during the mid 1500s...too weird!

    1. Hi Amanda, thanks for commenting! Yes, it definitely does go quite far back.
I found this on wikipedia: "Historically, the ritual encouraged young women to walk up a flight of stairs backwards while holding a candle and a hand mirror, in a darkened house. As they gazed into the mirror, they were supposed to be able to catch a view of their future husband's face.[1] There was, however, a chance that they would see a skull (or the face of the Grim Reaper) instead, indicating that they were destined to die before they married."

It's interesting that this part didn't continue into today. I think it would be popular for this to happen because the "Bloody Mary" game seems to happen at sleepovers for teenagers, and I think that young girls would love to pretend to see the face of who they are going to marry.
